The composer/producer I chose for my independent research entry is a man named Ollie Jones, better known as Skream. He is a Dubstep producer born in London, England based in Croydon, England. Ollie started his career at fourteen years old when he entered a very popular club for bass music in the early 2000s called FWD he then began his journey into music production, making tunes that weren’t quite a part of any genre, at the time his music was considered grime or garage but there was something about them that was different. Ollie began producing almost 20 tunes a week of this new genre that wasn’t really catching on until he met up with life long friend and partner in crime Benga the two Croydon based bass beasts then started DJing radio shows that were broadcasted around Europe and got them decent exposure, Ollie then made a tune that would change it all for him. This tune was called “Midnight Request Line” no one was familiar with the deep dark sub and the hair splitting reverberate snare, people fell in love with it. He then went on to become a hit crafting machine with tunes and remixes such La Roux – In for the kill, Rutten, Stagger and so on these tunes along with many others written by UK based producers really launched Dubstep on its world wide take over. Ollie paved the way for many producers approaching the scene nowadays, although some take the bass driven music a bit to far Ollie knows how fads spreads and he attends to stay on top of it and keep his music fresh with hits such as, “Exothermic Reaction”, “Shot yourself in the foot again”, “Phat Head” and “Anticipate”. Ollie also producers many pop singers based in the UK and releases disco and 130 BPM mixes, his musical knowledge is extremely extended and he attends to act upon that quite a lot not really worried about what others say he just wants to keep his mind open and the music flowing. Ollie is also a part of a group called Magnetic Man, which features 3 acts, Skream (Ollie Jones), Benga (Beni Uthman), and Artwork (name unknown) they are considered a dubstep “Super group” because of their hit after hit productions and outstanding live shows they are known for their hits such as “ I Need Air”, “MAD”, “Anthemic”, and “Fire”. Ollie Jones is an innovator and without a doubt paved the way for many musicians and producers coming up, he works harder than most and loves what he does he helped start a movement and inspired thousands people. In recent interviews he stated “I want to make sure once this fad dies out, I’m still standing” he wants to be known as more than just a Dubstep producer and stray from the darker side of things. He is a great musician and will go down in history as one, watch out for him in the near future possibly presented something brand new to a world of closed minded people.
